In this episode of Brief Talk After Dark, UNB Tim welcomes back Josh of Hunks of Metal after their original recording was lost due to a technical issue, and the second conversation turns out even stronger than the first . Since their initial attempt, the two have met in person, which adds a new layer of creative energy to the discussion. What unfolds is a deep dive into craftsmanship, queer identity, leather culture, and the power of custom design to help people feel confident and seen.
Josh shares how he transitioned from working as a doctor of physical therapy into building Hunks of Metal, a business focused on custom jewelry and metal hardware for the kink and leather community. Rooted in a fifth-generation family tradition of metalworking, his approach blends old-world craftsmanship with modern design tools like 3D modeling and casting. Rather than mass-producing generic pieces, he creates sculpted hardware featuring masculine relief figures, mythological inspiration, floral motifs, and highly personal elements that can transform a standard harness into something entirely unique. As Tim points out, many people do not realize they can upgrade or swap out their existing harness hardware to completely reinvent the look without purchasing an entirely new piece.
The conversation expands beyond harnesses into wedding bands, belt accessories, jock and thong embellishments, and even crossover pieces inspired by anime and pop culture. Josh explains his collaborative design process, which often begins with mood boards and detailed conversations before moving into rendering, casting, finishing, and adding gold or gemstone details. Whether someone is commissioning a leather centerpiece, a custom ring, or a decorative belt slide, the goal remains the same: create something that reflects the individual rather than a template.
Tim connects this back to his ongoing creative projects, including Free the Bulge and his fascination with bro drag, a camp reinterpretation of exaggerated masculinity. The themes of empowerment, visibility, and refusing to shrink oneself run throughout the episode. They also discuss the evolution of leather style, from traditional black pieces to mixing harnesses with dress shirts, suits, and everyday fashion. The message is clear: leather and metalwork do not have to be confined to a bar or dungeon; they can be integrated into personal style in bold and unexpected ways.
Josh also talks materials and longevity, emphasizing stainless steel, sterling silver, and even titanium with anodized color effects that create durable rainbow finishes without paint. Quality matters. Leather can last decades, and well-crafted metal will outlive trends. In a world of fast fashion and mass production, bespoke craftsmanship offers something more meaningful.
